Geography
Pap lies in the southwestern part of the county, approximately 30 kilometres south of Lake Balaton and about 15 kilometres east of the county seat, Kaposvár. The settlement is positioned on the Great Hungarian Plain’s transitional zone, characterized by gently rolling terrain and agricultural land.

Area and Population
According to data published by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), Pap covered an area of roughly 22 square kilometres. In the 2017 census, the village recorded a population of 1,586 inhabitants, resulting in a low population density typical of rural settlements in the region.

History
The earliest documented mention of Pap dates to the mid‑13th century, appearing in a royal charter of 1244 that listed the village among the holdings of the Diocese of Veszprém. Throughout the medieval period, the settlement was subject to the feudal system, changing hands among various noble families. In the 20th century, Pap, like many Hungarian villages, experienced land reforms, collectivization during the socialist era, and subsequent depopulation trends following the transition to a market economy.

Economy
Pap’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, with local farms cultivating cereals, corn, and sunflower, as well as livestock breeding. Small‑scale food processing and agritourism have developed in recent years, leveraging the village’s rural character and proximity to tourist routes near Lake Balaton.

Infrastructure and Services
The village is accessible via regional road 71, which connects it to Kaposvár and neighboring settlements. Public transportation includes regular bus services to Kaposvár and Siófok. Educational facilities comprise a primary school serving the local children; secondary education is obtained in larger towns. Health services are provided by a local general practitioner, with hospitals located in Kaposvár.

Cultural and Community Life
Pap maintains cultural traditions typical of Somogy County, including folk music groups, annual harvest festivals, and a community centre that hosts local events. The Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist, dating from the 18th century, serves as a notable architectural landmark.

Administrative Structure
The village is governed by a mayor (polgármester) and a council elected every five years. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Somogy County Council and contributes to the Kaposvár parliamentary constituency for national elections.
