Pantabangan

Pantabangan is a first‑class municipality in the province of Nueva Ecija, Philippines. It is situated in the southern part of the province, bordering the provinces of Pampanga and Tarlac. The municipality is most prominently known for the Pantabangan Dam and its associated reservoir, one of the largest man‑made lakes in the country.

Geography

  • Location: Approximately 155 km north of Manila.
  • Area: Covers roughly 207 km², of which about 80 % is agricultural land.
  • Topography: The terrain includes the Sierra Madre mountain range to the east and the central Luzon plain to the west. The Pantabangan Reservoir occupies the northern part of the municipality.

History

  • Established: Pantabangan was created as a separate municipal district in 1918, having previously been part of the town of Concepcion.
  • Relocation: In the early 1970s, the original townsite was submerged following the construction of the Pantabangan Dam; residents were relocated to a newly planned town site on higher ground.
  • The dam, completed in 1974, was part of the Upper Pampanga River Multipurpose Project initiated by the Marcos administration.

  • Population: According to the 2020 Philippine Census, Pantabangan had a population of approximately 27,000 residents.
  • Language: The predominant language is Ilocano, with Tagalog and English used in education and administration.

Economy

  • Agriculture: The municipality’s economy is largely agricultural, focusing on rice, corn, and vegetable cultivation. Irrigation from the Pantabangan Reservoir supports intensive farming.
