History
The name “Palo Alto” (Spanish for “tall tree”) derives from the coastal redwood El Palo Alto, a prominent 110‑foot tree that stood near the San Francisco Bay shoreline in the 19th century. The area was originally inhabited by the Ohlone people. Spanish explorers mapped the region in the late 18th century, and the land later became part of the Mexican land grant Rancho Rinconada del Arroyo de San Francisco.
In 1864, Leland Stanford purchased large tracts of the surrounding land for the establishment of Stanford University. The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1864, followed by the completion of the Stanford University campus in 1891, spurred residential development. Palo Alto was incorporated as a city on April 23 1894.
