Palazzo Biscari (also referred to as Palazzo dei Biscari) is a historic Baroque palace located in the historic centre of Catania, on the island of Sicily, Italy. Constructed primarily during the 17th and 18th centuries, the palace served as the principal residence of the aristocratic Biscari family, a lineage that held the title of Princes of Biscari.
History
The origins of the palace date to the mid‑17th century, when the Biscari family began acquiring adjacent properties in Catania’s city centre. Over successive generations, these structures were amalgamated and extensively renovated, culminating in the unified palatial complex that stands today. The building’s development continued into the early 19th century, incorporating both original Baroque elements and later Neoclassical modifications.
Architecture
Palazzo Biscari exemplifies Sicilian Baroque architecture, characterized by a richly decorated façade, ornate stonework, and elaborate interior stucco work. Notable architectural features include:
- A grand entrance portal with sculpted masks and floral motifs.
- An interior courtyard (cortile) surrounded by arched porticoes.
- A monumental wooden staircase with intricately carved balusters.
- Frescoes and ceiling paintings attributed to Sicilian artists such as Mario Tadini and Salvatore Lemma, depicting mythological and allegorical scenes.
- A series of salons (salone) featuring decorative plasterwork, gilded details, and period furnishings.
Cultural Significance
The palace is regarded as one of the most important examples of aristocratic domestic architecture in Catania. Its preservation contributes to the broader understanding of the city’s urban development following the devastating 1693 earthquake, after which much of Catania was rebuilt in the Baroque style.
Current Use
In contemporary times, Palazzo Biscari operates as a cultural venue. The interior spaces are rented for private events such as weddings, conferences, and exhibitions. Portions of the palace are occasionally opened to the public for guided tours, allowing visitors to view its artistic and architectural heritage.
Heritage Status
Palazzo Biscari is listed among the protected monuments of the Sicilian cultural heritage inventory, which regulates restoration and conservation efforts to maintain its historical integrity.
