Paignton railway station is a railway station serving the seaside town of Paignton in Devon, England. It is situated on the branch line from the Exeter to Plymouth main line at Newton Abbot and is the terminus of the Riviera Line, which runs between Paignton and Exeter St David's. The station is owned by Network Rail and managed by Great Western Railway (GWR).
Location and layout
The station lies on the seafront, adjacent to the town’s harbor and promenade. It has three platforms: two face the main station building and a third, formerly used for freight and occasional excursion services, is a through platform that can accommodate longer trains. The main building houses a ticket office, passenger waiting area, café, and retail outlets.
History
- Opened: 2 August 1859 by the Torbay Railway as the terminus of a line from Newton Abbot.
- Original structure: A modest wooden building replaced in 1910 by a larger brick edifice designed by G. H. Elliot of the Great Western Railway (GWR).
- 1948: Nationalisation transferred ownership to British Railways, Southern Region.
- 1974: The station was downgraded from a staffed terminus to an unstaffed halt for a brief period before staff were reinstated due to passenger demand.
- Recent upgrades: Platform extensions and installation of ticket barriers were completed in 2019 to improve accessibility and capacity.
Services
Great Western Railway operates regular services from Paignton:
- Riviera Line: Approximately hourly services to Exeter St David's, with increased frequency during peak summer months.
- Cross-country services: Seasonal direct services to London Paddington (via Bristol Temple Meads) operate primarily in summer and on selected weekends.
- Heritage and excursion: The Dartmouth Steam Railway, a heritage line, runs occasional special services that connect with Paignton station.

- Ticket office (open weekdays 06:30 – 20:00, weekends 08:00 – 18:00).
- Self-service ticket machines.
- Waiting rooms with seating and climate control.

Connectivity
The station is a transport hub for the town, with bus services linking to Torquay, Brixham, and inland Devon. A taxi rank and local coach services for holiday destinations are also available directly outside the main entrance.
Future developments
Network Rail and local authorities have identified the station as a candidate for further capacity enhancements, including potential platform lengthening to accommodate longer intercity trains, subject to funding and planning approval.
