Francisco "Paco" Castellano Rodríguez (born 17 February 1944) is a Spanish former professional footballer who played primarily as a central defender. He is best known for his extensive career at UD Las Palmas and a successful spell with Real Madrid in the 1970s.
Early Life and Career: Born in Arucas, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Castellano began his football journey in the youth ranks of local club UD Las Palmas. He quickly rose through the ranks, making his senior debut for the club in the early 1960s.
Club Career:
- UD Las Palmas (1963–1973): Castellano became a cornerstone of the Las Palmas defence during one of the club's most successful periods. He was instrumental in the team achieving their highest-ever finish in La Liga, coming second in the 1968–69 season. Throughout his first spell, he amassed over 200 league appearances, establishing himself as a reliable and respected defender.
- Real Madrid (1973–1976): His impressive performances for Las Palmas attracted the attention of Real Madrid, whom he joined in 1973. During his three seasons in the capital, Castellano contributed to a highly successful period for the club, winning two La Liga titles (1974–75, 1975–76) and one Copa del Rey (1973–74). He played a vital role in their defensive solidity, often partnering with other legendary defenders.
- UD Las Palmas (1976–1982): After his successful stint with Real Madrid, Castellano returned to his hometown club, UD Las Palmas, in 1976. He continued to be a key player for several more seasons before eventually retiring from professional football in 1982. In total, he made over 400 official appearances for Las Palmas across both spells, becoming one of the club's most iconic figures.
International Career: Castellano earned one cap for the senior Spain national football team in 1969. He also represented Spain at the U23 level.
