Description
Ozicrypta reticulata is a mygalomorph spider characterized by a relatively robust body and a carapace bearing a reticulated (net‑like) pattern of pale and dark markings, which gives the species its epithet “reticulata”. Adult body length ranges from 15 to 30 mm, with the female generally larger than the male. Like other barychelids, it possesses sturdy chelicerae and scopulae on the tarsi that aid in burrow construction.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is endemic to Australia, with confirmed records from the state of Queensland, particularly in the rainforest and wet sclerophyll zones of the Wet Tropics bioregion. Specimens have been collected from leaf‑litter rich forest floors at elevations from sea level to approximately 800 m.
Behavior and Ecology
- Burrow construction: Females construct silk‑lined burrows capped with a hinged or camouflaged trapdoor. The burrow entrance often incorporates surrounding debris and soil, providing concealment.
- Predatory habits: As an ambush predator, the spider waits within the burrow for prey, typically insects and other small arthropods, to pass nearby before striking.
- Reproduction: Mating occurs seasonally; after copulation, the female lays eggs in a silk egg sac within the burrow. Spiderlings remain in the maternal burrow for a period before dispersing.
Conservation Status
There is currently no assessment of Ozicrypta reticulata on the IUCN Red List. Its limited known range and specialization to forest habitats suggest that habitat alteration (e.g., deforestation, land development) could potentially impact local populations, but specific threats have not been documented.
Research Notes
The species was first described in a taxonomic revision of the Australian Barychelidae by Robert J. Raven and Tracey A. Churchill (1994). The original description includes morphological details of the male palpal organ and female spermathecae, which are used to differentiate O. reticulata from congeners.
