Oudkarspel is a village and former municipality in the province of North Holland, the Netherlands. It is situated approximately 20 km north‑west of Amsterdam and forms part of the municipality of Koggenland since the municipal reorganization of 2007.
Geography
The village lies on the shores of the former Zuiderzee, now the IJsselmeer, at an elevation of about –2 m (−6 ft) below sea level. The built‑up area is surrounded by polder landscapes typical of the Dutch North Holland region. The main thoroughfare through Oudkarspel is the N247 provincial road, which connects it with neighboring settlements such as Langedijk and Stede Nicolaas.
Historical development
Oudkarspel was first mentioned in historical records in the 13th century under the name Olde Crespel, which is derived from the Old Dutch words “oud” (old) and “karspel” (church or parish). The settlement grew around a church that served the surrounding agricultural community. In 1817, following the establishment of the modern municipal system in the Netherlands, Oudkarspel became an independent municipality.
In 1979 the municipality of Oudkarspel merged with the neighboring municipalities of Langedijk and Stede Nicolaas to form the larger municipality of Langedijk. A further reorganization in 2007 resulted in the creation of the municipality of Koggenland, of which Oudkarspel is now a constituent village.
Demographics
As of the most recent municipal statistics (2023), Oudkarspel has a population of approximately 5,200 inhabitants. The population density reflects the typical semi‑rural character of the region, with a mix of residential houses, farms, and small businesses.

- Reformed Church of Oudkarspel: The current church building dates from 1904, replacing earlier medieval structures. It is noted for its neogothic architecture and serves as a focal point for local religious life.
- Windmill De Vegt: A historic wooden smock mill built in 1850, originally used for grinding grain. It has been restored and is accessible to the public during certain events.
- Kwadijk‑Oudkarspel Canal: An important waterway constructed in the 19th century for drainage and transport, illustrating the region’s extensive water management infrastructure.

The local economy is largely based on agriculture, horticulture (especially bulb cultivation), and small‑scale manufacturing. Proximity to larger urban centers such as Alkmaar and Amsterdam provides additional employment opportunities for residents who commute.

Public transport options include regional bus services connecting Oudkarspel to surrounding towns. The nearest railway stations are in Alkmaar and Beverwijk, located roughly 10–15 km away, providing access to the national rail network.
