Oto Haščák (born 31 January 1964) is a Slovak former professional ice hockey player. He played as a center and competed in the men's ice hockey tournaments at three Winter Olympics: 1988 (representing Czechoslovakia), 1994, and 1998 (representing Slovakia).
Early Life and Career
Haščák was born in Martin, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia). He began his professional career in the 1983–84 season with ASVŠ Dukla Trenčín in the Czechoslovak First Ice Hockey League (TCH), where he played through the 1989–90 season.
Playing Career
Club Career
Haščák was selected 143rd overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, though he never played in the NHL. His club career spanned multiple European leagues:
- Czechoslovak First League (TCH): ASVŠ Dukla Trenčín (1983–1990) — 238 regular season games, 199 points (86 goals, 113 assists).
- Swedish Elitserien (SEL): Södertälje SK (1990–1992) and Västra Frölunda HC (1993–1994).
- Swedish second tier (SWE.2): Södertälje SK (1992–1993).
- German DEL: Kaufbeurer Adler (1994–1996).
- Slovak Extraliga (SVK): Dukla Trenčín (1995–1996, 1998–1999, 2000–2002).
- Czech Extraliga (ELH): HC Petra Vsetín (1996–1997) and HC ZPS-Barum Zlín (1997–1998).
- Finnish SM-liiga: Ässät (1997–1998).
He retired from professional play after the 2001–02 season.
International Career
Haščák represented Czechoslovakia at the 1988 Winter Olympics and the 1989 World Championships. After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, he played for Slovakia at the 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics, as well as multiple World Championship tournaments. In total, he recorded 37 points (11 goals, 26 assists) in 54 senior international games.
He won bronze medals at the World Ice Hockey Championships in 1989 and 1990, and silver and bronze medals at the European Ice Hockey Championships in 1989 and 1990, respectively.
Post-Playing Career
Following his playing career, Haščák transitioned into hockey management and scouting. He has served as a scout for the New York Rangers and as Director of Hockey Operations for HC Slovan Bratislava.
Personal Life
Haščák's son, Marek Haščák, also became a professional ice hockey player and represented Slovakia internationally.
