Osmond Studios

Osmond Studios was a privately owned and operated television and music production facility located in Orem, Utah, established by the Osmond family in the early 1970s. For over a decade, it served as the primary hub for the Osmonds' entertainment empire, hosting a variety of television shows, recording sessions, and other media productions.

History

The Osmond family, having achieved significant success in music and television by the late 1960s and early 1970s, decided to build their own state-of-the-art production complex. Construction on Osmond Studios began in 1971, and the facility officially opened its doors in 1973. The decision to build in Orem, Utah, rather than Hollywood, California, was a deliberate choice by the Osmonds to remain close to their family and spiritual roots.

At its peak, Osmond Studios was a comprehensive, self-contained entertainment factory. It was equipped with multiple sound stages, cutting-edge recording studios, post-production and editing suites, costume departments, set construction facilities, and offices. This allowed the Osmonds an unprecedented level of control over their creative output, from concept to final product, which was unusual for musical acts of their era.

Notable Productions

Osmond Studios became synonymous with the Osmond family's television ventures, particularly:

  • Donny & Marie (1976-1979): The hugely popular ABC variety show, starring Donny and Marie Osmond, was entirely produced and filmed at Osmond Studios. This was a significant achievement, demonstrating that a major network variety show could be successfully produced outside of Hollywood.
  • The Osmond Show (1976): A short-lived variety show featuring the entire Osmond family.
  • Various Television Specials: Numerous Osmond family Christmas specials, musical performances, and other television programs were taped at the facility.
  • Music Recording: The studio's recording facilities were used to produce many of the Osmonds' hit albums and singles, as well as for other artists.
  • Music Videos: The facility was also utilized for the production of music videos during their formative years.

Decline and Sale

As the 1980s progressed, the financial landscape of the entertainment industry shifted, and the Osmonds' mainstream popularity began to wane. The high costs associated with maintaining such a large, independent production facility became a significant burden. The studio faced financial difficulties, exacerbated by changing television formats and the overall shift in music tastes.

Despite efforts to diversify its client base and lease out its facilities, Osmond Studios eventually proved unsustainable for the family to maintain. The complex was gradually sold off in pieces or entirely in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The property has since undergone various redevelopments and now houses different businesses and residential areas, with little physical evidence remaining of its former life as a major entertainment production hub.

Legacy

Osmond Studios stands as a unique chapter in entertainment history, representing an ambitious and pioneering effort by a musical family to control their own production destiny outside the traditional Hollywood system. It demonstrated the feasibility of producing high-quality national television programming and music from an independent, family-run facility in a non-traditional location.
