Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Chordata
  • Class: Mammalia
  • Order: Chiroptera
  • Family: Rhinolophidae
  • Genus: Rhinolophus
  • Species: R. osgoodi

Description
Osgood's horseshoe bat is a medium‑sized member of the horseshoe‑bat family, characterized by the distinctive horseshoe‑shaped noseleaf used in echolocation. Detailed morphological measurements (forearm length, ear size, etc.) have been recorded in the original species description but are not universally available in summary sources.

Distribution and habitat
The species is known from a limited number of localities in the Yunnan Province of southwestern China. It inhabits subtropical montane forests, often roosting in caves or hollow trees. Records outside this region are lacking, and the full extent of its range remains uncertain.

Ecology and behavior
Like other horseshoe bats, R. osgoodi is insectivorous, capturing prey on the wing using echolocation calls that are typical of the genus. Specific dietary preferences, reproductive biology, and seasonal movements have not been thoroughly documented.

Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) currently classifies Osgood's horseshoe bat as Data Deficient because of the paucity of information on its population size, trends, and threats. Habitat loss due to logging and agricultural expansion is considered a potential risk, but its impact on this species has not been quantified.

Etymology
The common and scientific names honor the American zoologist Wilfred Hudson Osgood (1875–1947), who made significant contributions to mammalian taxonomy.
