Early Life and Education
Heizer was born on February 18, 1871. He pursued his higher education at Lehigh University, graduating in 1894 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering.Career
Following his graduation, Heizer embarked on a distinguished career in mining. His early work involved various mining operations across Colorado, Arizona, and Mexico, where he gained practical experience in diverse geological and operational conditions.Around 1904, Heizer joined the United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Company (USSR&M Co.), a major player in the American mining landscape. During his tenure with the company, he managed several significant properties. Notably, he oversaw operations in Pachuca, Mexico, for Real del Monte y Pachuca, a subsidiary of USSR&M Co., which was a major silver producer.
Heizer's most significant contributions are often associated with the development of the Pioche mining district in Lincoln County, Nevada. He played a crucial role in establishing and advancing operations for the Combined Metals Reduction Company, another subsidiary of USSR&M Co. Under his leadership, a large differential flotation mill was constructed in Pioche during the 1920s, significantly improving the efficiency and profitability of lead-zinc ore processing in the region. His expertise was vital in overcoming the complex metallurgical challenges posed by Pioche's ore bodies.
Heizer retired from active management in the mid-1940s but continued to serve as a consultant, lending his vast experience to mining projects.
