Overview
Oru Manithanin Kathāi (Tamil: ஒரு மனிதனின் கதை, literally “The Story of a Man”) is a Tamil-language social novel written by Indian author Sivasankari. The work is notable for its realistic portrayal of alcoholism and its destructive impact on individuals and families in Tamil society.
Publication History
The novel was first serialized in the popular Tamil weekly magazine Ananda Vikatan from 1978 to 1979. Following its magazine run, it was published in book form by Vanathi Pathippagam in 1982. An English translation, titled Tyagu, was released in 1990, translated by Uma Narayanan.
Plot Summary
The narrative centers on a young man named Thyagu (also rendered as Tyagu), who comes from a modest, relatively trouble‑free family. Seeking recreation, he begins drinking socially; the habit quickly escalates into alcoholism. Thyagu’s dependence on alcohol leads to personal, familial, and social deterioration. With the assistance of a friend and the intervention of members of Alcoholics Anonymous, he confronts his addiction, experiences relapse, and ultimately strives toward recovery and a renewed life.
Adaptations
The novel was adapted for the screen twice. The first adaptation, released in 1987, was a Tamil film titled Avan (also known as Oru Manithanin Kathai), directed by S. P. Muthuraman and starring Raghuvaran as Thyagu. A second film version appeared in 1990, produced by AVM Productions and again featuring Raghuvaran in the lead role, directed by S. P. Muthuraman.
Literary Significance
Oru Manithanin Kathāi is recognized for its contribution to Tamil literature’s social realist tradition. It helped raise public awareness of alcohol abuse as a health and social issue, and it is frequently cited as an early work that treated alcoholism as a disease rather than a moral failing.
