General description
Orphinus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Dermestidae, commonly referred to as skin or carpet beetles. Members of this genus are small, typically ranging from 2 to 5 mm in length, and exhibit the characteristic rounded, oval shape of dermestid beetles. Their exoskeleton is generally dark brown to black, often with fine setae (hair-like structures) covering the dorsal surface. Adult beetles possess well‑developed antennae that are clubbed at the tips, a trait typical of the family.
Distribution
Species of Orphinus are primarily distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Oceania. Recorded occurrences include India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and various African nations. Some species have also been reported from the Pacific islands.
Ecology and biology
Larvae of Orphinus species are detritivorous, feeding on a variety of dry animal and plant materials such as dried meat, fur, feathers, pollen, and stored grain products. Consequently, several species are considered minor pests in museums, storage facilities, and households where they may damage organic collections or foodstuffs. Adults are generally nocturnal and are attracted to light sources.
Species diversity
The genus comprises dozens of described species, including but not limited to:
- Orphinus gracilis
- Orphinus chittagongi
- Orphinus geminatus
- Orphinus farinosus
- Orphinus parvulus
Taxonomic revisions are ongoing, and the exact number of valid species may change as new morphological and molecular studies are conducted.
Significance
While most Orphinus species have limited economic impact, certain members can become synanthropic, infesting human dwellings and stored products. Their presence is often monitored in pest‑management programs, especially in regions where museum and archival materials are at risk.
