Oriol de Bolòs

Oriol de Bolòs i Masclans (1931 – 2011) was a Spanish (Catalan) botanist and phytosociologist renowned for his contributions to the study of Mediterranean vegetation, plant geography, and the taxonomy of Iberian flora.

Early life and education

  • Born in 1931 in Barcelona, Spain.
  • Completed his higher education in natural sciences at the University of Barcelona, where he later earned a doctorate in Botany.

Academic and research career

  • Served as a professor of Botany at the University of Barcelona, where he taught courses in plant taxonomy, phytosociology, and biogeography.
  • Conducted extensive field research throughout the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearic Islands, and the Mediterranean region, focusing on vegetation classification and ecological relationships.
  • Played a pivotal role in developing and refining the Braun‑Blanquet method of phytosociological sampling within the Iberian context.

Major publications and contributions

  • Co‑author of the multi‑volume series Flora de la Península Ibérica (Flora of the Iberian Peninsula), a comprehensive reference for the region’s plant species.
  • Co‑author of Vegetación de la Península Ibérica (Vegetation of the Iberian Peninsula), a seminal work on the phytosociology and biogeography of Iberian plant communities.
  • Authored numerous scientific articles on Mediterranean ecosystems, plant community dynamics, and the effects of climate and anthropogenic factors on vegetation patterns.

Professional affiliations and honors

  • Member of the Institute of Botany (Institut de Botànica) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
  • Affiliated with the Catalan Society of Natural History (Societat Catalana d’Història Natural).
  • Received recognitions such as the Premio Nacional de Botánica for his lifetime achievements in botanical science.

Legacy
Oriol de Bolòs is regarded as a leading figure in Iberian phytosociology. His systematic approaches to vegetation classification and his extensive floristic documentation continue to inform contemporary research in ecology, conservation, and climate change studies within the Mediterranean basin.
