Orikhiv Raion (Ukrainian: Оріхівський район) was an administrative district (raion) in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, southeastern Ukraine. Its administrative center was the city of Orikhiv.
Geography
The raion covered an area of approximately 1,400 km² (540 sq mi) in the central part of Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The terrain was predominantly steppe, with the Dnieper River basin influencing local agriculture.
History
- Establishment: Orikhiv Raion was established on 7 March 1923 as part of the administrative reforms of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
- Soviet period: Throughout the Soviet era, the raion's boundaries and internal subdivisions were adjusted several times, reflecting broader territorial reorganizations.
- Post‑independence: Following Ukraine’s independence in 1991, the raion remained an integral unit of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, overseeing local governance, education, healthcare, and infrastructure within its jurisdiction.
Administrative Structure
Prior to its abolition, Orikhiv Raion comprised:
- 1 city council (Orikhiv)
- 2 settlement councils (urban-type settlements)
- 13 rural councils, encompassing 55 villages
Population
According to the 2001 Ukrainian Census, the raion had a population of 40,358. Estimates in 2020 placed the population at approximately 38,500 residents, reflecting a gradual decline common to many rural districts in Ukraine.
2020 Administrative Reform
On 18 July 2020, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s parliament) adopted a nationwide administrative‑territorial reform aimed at reducing the number of raions. As a result, Orikhiv Raion was abolished, and its territory was merged into the newly enlarged Polohy Raion. The reform reduced the number of raions in Zaporizhzhia Oblast from 20 to 5.
Economy and Infrastructure
The raion’s economy was primarily based on agriculture, with grain, sunflower, and livestock farming dominating. Small‑scale industrial activities were centered in Orikhiv, including food processing and light manufacturing. The region was served by regional roads linking it to Zaporizhzhia, Polohy, and other neighboring districts.
Legacy
Although Orikhiv Raion no longer exists as an administrative unit, the former district’s historical boundaries continue to be referenced in statistical reporting, land‑registry documents, and local cultural identity.
