- Oficial (Officer) – for notable contributions, typically at the regional or state level.
- Cavaleiro (Knight) – granted to emerging artists or those whose work has begun to influence the cultural scene.
Each grade is accompanied by a distinctive insignia, usually a medal featuring the stylized image of a lyre crossed with a book, symbolic of music and literature, respectively.
Administration
- The Ministry of Culture (Ministério da Cultura) oversees the order.
- A council composed of cultural officials, scholars, and previous awardees reviews nominations and recommends candidates to the President of Brazil, who formally appoints the honorees.
Nomination Process
- Nominations may be submitted by cultural institutions, professional associations, or by citizens through a formal petition.
- Supporting documentation must demonstrate the nominee’s impact on Brazilian cultural life.
- Selections are announced annually, typically in the month of October, coinciding with Brazil’s National Culture Day.
