Orcs Must Die! 2

Orcs Must Die! 2 is an action‑tower‑defense video game developed by Robot Entertainment and published by Deep Silver. It is the sequel to the 2009 title Orcs Must Die! and was originally released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 on July 31 2012. A later “Definitive Edition” was released for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on September 16 2015. The game was built using Unreal Engine 3.

Gameplay
The game combines third‑person shooter mechanics with strategic placement of traps and environmental hazards. Players assume the role of a “War Mage” tasked with defending a rift from successive waves of orcs and other fantasy creatures. Each level presents a series of “rooms” in which the player must eliminate a set number of enemies before a timer expires. Traps can be purchased with in‑game currency earned by killing enemies and are limited in number, requiring the player to balance offensive firepower with defensive planning. The title features both single‑player and cooperative multiplayer modes, the latter allowing two players to coordinate trap placement and combat.

Development and Release
Development began shortly after the commercial success of the original Orcs Must Die!. Robot Entertainment, formed by former employees of Ensemble Studios, aimed to expand the series’ gameplay depth and introduce cooperative play. The game was announced at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and released in mid‑2012 for PC and Xbox 360. A downloadable content (DLC) expansion titled The Dark Forge was released in 2013, adding new levels, traps, and a co‑op campaign. The Definitive Edition bundled the base game with all previously released DLC and introduced graphical enhancements and support for modern consoles.

Reception
Orcs Must Die! 2 received generally favorable reviews from critics. On Metacritic, the PC version holds a score of 78/100, while the Xbox 360 version has a score of 78/100 as well. Reviewers praised the game's blend of action and strategic trap placement, the addition of cooperative multiplayer, and its replay value, though some criticism was directed at occasional performance issues on the Xbox 360 platform. The game has been noted for its influence on subsequent titles that combine tower‑defense mechanics with direct combat.

Legacy
The success of Orcs Must Da 2 contributed to the continuation of the franchise, leading to the release of Orcs Must Die! 3 in 2014 and Orcs Must Die! 4 in 2021. The series is recognized for popularizing the hybrid action–tower‑defense genre within the broader video‑game market.
