Operation Vantage

Operation Vantage was a British military deployment in 1961 intended to support the newly independent State of Kuwait against territorial claims by neighboring Iraq.

Following the termination of the Anglo-Kuwaiti Treaty of 1899 on June 19, 1961, Kuwait became a sovereign state. Six days later, Iraqi leader Abd al-Karim Qasim publicly declared that Kuwait was an integral part of Iraqi territory, asserting that it had historically been part of the Basra province under the Ottoman Empire. In response to the perceived threat of an imminent invasion, the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, formally requested military assistance from the United Kingdom under the terms of a newly signed Treaty of Friendship.

The United Kingdom launched Operation Vantage on July 1, 1961. The operation involved a rapid and significant mobilization of the British Armed Forces. Initial deployments included 42 Commando Royal Marines, who were transported by the aircraft carrier HMS Bulwark. These were followed by additional army battalions, armored units, and air support provided by the Royal Air Force (RAF). At its peak, the British force consisted of several thousand personnel supported by naval assets, including the aircraft carriers HMS Victorious and HMS Centaur.

The primary objective of the operation was to deter Iraqi military aggression and stabilize the region. British forces established defensive positions along the border between Kuwait and Iraq. While tensions remained high, no direct military engagement occurred between British and Iraqi forces.

The international community responded to the crisis through the United Nations and the Arab League. Although the Soviet Union vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution regarding Kuwait's independence, the Arab League eventually voted to admit Kuwait as a member. The Arab League subsequently organized the Arab League Security Force, composed of troops from various Arab nations, to replace the British presence. The withdrawal of British forces began in August 1961 and was completed by October 1961, effectively ending the operation.
