Oost-Souburg

Geography and Location

Oost-Souburg is positioned to the east of the city of Vlissingen itself, and lies in close proximity to the city of Middelburg. Its name, "Oost-Souburg," literally translates to "East-Souburg," distinguishing it from the nearby hamlet of West-Souburg, which is now largely absorbed into the urban area of Vlissingen. The village is characterized by its residential areas and serves as a commuter town for the larger cities on Walcheren.

Demographics

As of January 2023, Oost-Souburg has a population of approximately 10,075 residents, making it one of the larger villages within the municipality of Vlissingen.

Infrastructure

The village is served by the Souburg railway station, which provides connections on the Roosendaal–Vlissingen railway line, linking it to other major towns and cities in Zeeland and beyond. This accessibility has contributed to its growth as a residential area.

History

Historically, Oost-Souburg developed as a separate settlement, while West-Souburg was associated with the older castle of Souburg. Over time, Oost-Souburg grew significantly, particularly in the 20th century, becoming a prominent residential center on Walcheren due to its favorable location and connectivity.
