Onyx Moonshine is an American twice-distilled alcoholic beverage produced by Onyx Spirits Company. Although legally produced, it is marketed as "moonshine." It is made in a microdistillery originally located in East Hartford, Connecticut, and was the official spirit of the 2012 Grammy Awards.
History and Production
Onyx Spirits, the company that produces Onyx Moonshine, was founded by Adam von Gootkin and Peter Kowalczyk in 2011. The product is distilled in reflux column stills from a mash of mixed corn and grain. After two distillations, it reaches approximately 80% alcohol by volume (160 proof) and is then diluted to bottling strength. The final product is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof). Bottles are corked and labeled by hand.
The company describes the product as "the world's first ultra-premium American moonshine," using a proprietary secret recipe with ingredients including corn, malted barley, and several other grains, along with Connecticut spring water.
Distribution and Recognition
The product was initially distributed in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. It was named "2012 Best of New England" by Yankee magazine. As of 2018, the company announced it was relocating from its East Hartford location to expand production and aging capabilities.
