Onimusha: Warlords is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Capcom, originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2001. It is the first installment in the Onimusha series and blends elements of survival horror with intense hack-and-slash combat, set against a backdrop of feudal Japan intertwined with supernatural demonic forces.
Gameplay The gameplay of Onimusha: Warlords is characterized by its fixed camera angles, similar to Capcom's Resident Evil series, which it initially spun off from. Players control Samanosuke Akechi, a samurai warrior, and later Kaede, a kunoichi, as they battle various demons. Combat is real-time, focusing on melee weapons such as swords, spears, and elemental weapons imbued with magic. A key mechanic is the ability to absorb the souls of defeated enemies, which can be used to upgrade weapons and armor, as well as replenish health or magic. Samanosuke gains three elemental weapons: Raizan (lightning sword), Enryu (fire sword), and Hyosai (ice spear), each with unique magical attacks. Puzzle-solving and exploring environments for keys and items are also integral to progression.
Plot The game's story begins in 1560, during Japan's Sengoku period. Following the Battle of Okehazama, warlord Oda Nobunaga is seemingly killed, but is soon resurrected by a demonic force known as the Genma. With newfound power, Nobunaga's forces attack Inabayama Castle, kidnapping Princess Yuki, a cousin of Samanosuke Akechi. Samanosuke, alongside his ninja companion Kaede, sets out to rescue Yuki and uncover the truth behind the Genma and Nobunaga's resurgence. During his quest, Samanosuke is bestowed with a gauntlet by the Ogre Clan, which grants him the power to absorb souls and fight the Genma effectively. The narrative explores themes of heroism, sacrifice, and the clash between historical events and supernatural mythology.
Development and Release Onimusha: Warlords was originally conceived as a Resident Evil title set in a ninja mansion before evolving into its own distinct property. It was one of the earliest PlayStation 2 titles to sell over a million units, achieving critical and commercial success for its cinematic presentation, combat system, and engaging atmosphere. The game's success led to several sequels and spin-offs. A high-definition remaster of the game was released in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, featuring updated graphics, widescreen support, and new control options.
