Description
Omonadus formicarius is a small beetle, typically measuring 2–3 mm in length. The head is constricted behind the eyes, giving a “necked” appearance, and the antennae are filiform, consisting of 11 segments. The pronotum is narrower than the elytra, and the elytra are finely punctate with subtle striations.

Distribution
The species is reported from temperate regions of the Palearctic, including much of Europe and parts of western Asia. It has also been recorded in North America, where it may have been introduced through trade. Precise range limits are insufficiently documented; records are largely based on sporadic entomological surveys and museum specimens.

Habitat and ecology
O. formicarius is typically found in open, sunny habitats such as grasslands, meadows, and the edges of shrublands. Adults are frequently observed on flowers, where they feed on pollen and small arthropods. The larvae develop in decaying plant material, leaf litter, or under the bark of dead wood, where they consume fungi, detritus, and possibly small invertebrates. Seasonal activity peaks in late spring through early summer, corresponding with the flowering periods of many host plants.

Behavior
Adults exhibit rapid, erratic movements and may mimic ants both morphologically and behaviorally, a likely defensive adaptation against predators. Mating behavior involves the male locating a receptive female on a flower or nearby vegetation, after which copulation occurs on the substrate. Oviposition is presumed to take place in concealed microhabitats with suitable organic matter for larval development, although specific oviposition sites have not been comprehensively documented.

Conservation status
The species does not appear on major threatened‑species lists (e.g., IUCN Red List). It is generally considered common within suitable habitats, and there are no known significant threats directly targeting O. formicarius.
