The Olympus Festival (Greek: Φεστιβάλ Ολύμπου) is an annual summer festival of music, theatre, and related cultural activities held in the Pieria region of northern Greece. It takes place during the months of July and August and is regarded as the largest event of its kind in northern Greece.
Overview
The festival’s purpose is to provide cultural entertainment for both residents and tourists, fostering intercultural contact and promoting regional tourism. Events are staged at various historic and archaeological sites, including the ancient cities of Dion and Leivithra, as well as venues in the city of Katerini.
History
The inaugural edition was organized in 1972. Since its inception, the festival has expanded to include a wide range of artistic disciplines and has become a prominent cultural institution in the region. In 2010 the organizers introduced a “guest country of honor” program, inviting a different nation each year to showcase its cultural heritage alongside Greek performances.
Organization
The festival is administered by the non‑profit organization Festival Olympou (OR.FE.O), based in Katerini. OR.FE.O is governed by a nine‑member management board elected for three‑year terms. The organization cooperates with the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the former municipality of Dion, and other local authorities in Pieria. It also maintains partnerships with state theatres in Athens and Thessaloniki and collaborates with private theatre companies and foreign cultural institutions.
Program
Typical offerings include:
- Classical concerts and ballets (e.g., a 2016 performance of Swan Lake featuring Russian dancers and local ballet students)
- Productions of classical Greek comedies and tragedies
- Contemporary theatre and modern music concerts
- Choir performances and traditional Greek music
- Free guided tours of archaeological parks and educational events focused on recent archaeological discoveries
