The Oltenia blind mole‑rat (Spalax istricus) is a species of rodent in the family Spalacidae. It is endemic to the southern part of Romania, where it occurs in the historical regions of Oltenia and Muntenia. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the species as Critically Endangered, possibly extinct.
Taxonomy
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Chordata
- Class: Mammalia
- Order: Rodentia
- Family: Spalacidae
- Genus: Spalax
- Species: S. istricus
The species was first described in 1909 by Lajos Méhely as a subspecies of the Bukovina blind mole‑rat (Spalax graecus). A 2013 morphological and phylogenetic study demonstrated that it constitutes a distinct taxon, a conclusion accepted by the American Society of Mammalogists and the IUCN Red List. Genetic data remain limited due to the scarcity of recent specimens.
Distribution and habitat
The Oltenia blind mole‑rat is restricted to the Wallachian Plain of southern Romania, occupying both hilly and flat terrains that support steppe or forest‑steppe vegetation. Its ecological preferences are thought to be similar to those of Mehely’s blind mole‑rat (Spalax antiquus), favoring subterranean burrows in soils associated with these habitats.
Conservation status
The species is listed as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) on the IUCN Red List. Historical persecution as an agricultural pest and, more recently, habitat loss due to intensive agriculture and conversion of steppe areas to ploughed fields are identified as the primary threats. Systematic surveys have failed to locate any individuals since the last confirmed sighting in 1983, and the species’ current population, if extant, is presumed to be extremely small and fragmented.
