Oliver Sundberg

Oliver Sundberg (born 16 February 1982) is a Danish speed skater. Along with fellow skater Cathrine Grage, he is the first Danish speed skater to compete at the international level since Kurt Stille retired in 1964.

Career overview
Sundberg broke Stille’s 41‑year‑old Danish records on 19 March 2005, posting times of 42.65 seconds in the 500 m and 2:06.51 in the 1 500 m at competitions in Groningen. He subsequently improved upon these marks, eventually establishing a total of 38 Danish records across various distances. By March 2007 he held 36 national records, including 38.35 seconds (500 m), 1:16.62 (1 000 m), 1:53.32 (1 500 m), 6:48.67 (5 000 m), and 14:25.57 (10 000 m).

His performances in the 2006 and 2007 seasons met the qualification standards of the International Skating Union (ISU), allowing him to compete in the European Speed Skating Championships and regularly participate in ISU World Cup events. At the Calgary races on 10–11 March 2007, Sundberg’s times on the 500 m and 1 500 m placed him ahead of five‑time Olympic gold‑medalist Eric Heiden on the Adelskalenderen (a ranking of all‑time speed‑skating performances).

Impact
Sundberg’s achievements marked a resurgence of Danish presence in international speed skating, ending a four‑decade hiatus since Stille’s career. His record‑breaking series contributed to the modernization of Danish speed‑skating standards and inspired subsequent athletes, including Grage, to pursue competitive participation at the European and World levels.
