Oliver Kirch

Oliver Kirch (born 21 August 1982) is a German former professional footballer who played primarily as a defensive midfielder, though he was also capable of playing as a right-back. He is perhaps best known for his time at Borussia Dortmund, where he played a role in the club's successful period under Jürgen Klopp.

Early Life and Career Kirch began his football career in the youth ranks of DJK Gütersloh and subsequently played for SC Verl.

Club Career

  • SC Verl (2002–2003): Kirch started his senior career with SC Verl in the Regionalliga Nord.
  • Borussia Mönchengladbach (2003–2007): He moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2003, initially featuring for their reserve team. He made his Bundesliga debut for the first team during the 2003–04 season, making a total of 13 league appearances for the club.
  • Arminia Bielefeld (2007–2010): In 2007, Kirch joined Arminia Bielefeld. He became a more regular fixture, playing in both the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga during his three seasons with the club, accumulating 80 league appearances.
  • 1. FC Kaiserslautern (2010–2012): Kirch spent two seasons with 1. FC Kaiserslautern, making 56 league appearances and scoring 3 goals.
  • Borussia Dortmund (2012–2015): In the summer of 2012, Kirch signed for Borussia Dortmund. While not always a first-team starter, he was a highly valued squad player known for his versatility, tactical intelligence, and strong work ethic. He was part of the Dortmund squad that reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2013 and made appearances in the DFB-Pokal final in 2014. His contributions were particularly noted during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, where he often stepped in admirably when key players were injured.
  • SC Paderborn 07 (2015–2017): After three seasons with Dortmund, Kirch moved to SC Paderborn 07 in the 2. Bundesliga.
  • Retirement: He announced his retirement from professional football in May 2017 at the age of 34, citing persistent struggles with an Achilles tendon injury.
