Olinto De Pretto

Olinto De Pretto (15 October 1857 – 3 December 1921) was an Italian physicist, mathematician, and engineer. He is noted for his early advocacy of a relationship between mass and energy that anticipates the mass–energy equivalence later formalized by Albert Einstein in 1905.

Early life and education
De Pretto was born in Bologna, Italy. He studied engineering and physics at the University of Bologna, where he obtained his doctorate in the late 19th century.

Academic and professional career
Following his graduation, De Pretto held teaching positions in technical institutes and served as a civil engineer on several public works projects in Italy. He published articles in scientific journals on topics ranging from mechanics to thermodynamics.

Contributions to physics

Mass–energy relation
In 1903, De Pretto published a paper titled “Ipotesi sull’origine della materia” (Hypothesis on the Origin of Matter) in the Rivista di Scientia. In this work he derived an expression of the form E = k m c², where c denotes the speed of light and k was a numerical factor close to 1. He argued that a quantity of mass could be regarded as a concentrated form of energy, a concept that pre‑dated Einstein’s special relativity formulation of mass–energy equivalence.

Reception
De Pretto’s ideas received limited attention outside Italy at the time, and his derivation did not gain widespread recognition. Later historical analyses have cited his work as an example of early speculation on the relationship between mass and energy, though Einstein’s 1905 derivation in “Does the Inertia of a Body Depend Upon Its Energy Content?” remains the primary source for the modern formulation of the principle.

Later life and legacy
De Pretto continued to work in engineering and education until his death in Bologna in 1921. While his contributions are not as widely cited as those of contemporaries such as Einstein, scholars of the history of physics acknowledge his 1903 paper as an early, independent articulation of a mass–energy relationship.
