  • Order: Asterales
  • Family: Asteraceae
  • Genus: Olearia
  • Species: Olearia canescens (F.Muell.) Benth.

Description
Olearia canescens is a shrub belonging to the daisy family (Asteraceae). The plant typically attains a height of 1–3 m. Its leaves are often described as grey‑green to silvery, bearing a dense covering of fine hairs (a tomentose indumentum) that gives the foliage a “canescent” (hoary) appearance, which is reflected in the specific epithet canescens. Leaves are generally alternate, simple, and have entire margins.

The inflorescences are capitula (flower heads) arranged singly or in small clusters at the ends of branchlets. Each head comprises white to pale lilac ray florets surrounding yellow disc florets, characteristic of many Olearia species. The flowering period occurs mainly in the austral spring and early summer.

Distribution and Habitat
Olearia canescens is native to eastern Australia, with confirmed occurrences in New South Wales and adjacent regions of Queensland. It inhabits sclerophyll forest, woodland, and heathland, often on sandy or rocky soils at low to moderate elevations.

Ecology
The species is a typical component of the understorey in its native habitats, providing nectar and pollen for a range of insects, including native bees and butterflies. Its dense foliage offers shelter for small vertebrates.

Conservation Status
According to the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, Olearia canescens has not been listed as threatened at a national level. Regional assessments may vary, but there is currently no indication of a significant decline in its populations.

Uses
Olearia canescens is occasionally cultivated in horticulture for its attractive silvery foliage and profuse daisy‑like flowers. It is valued in native garden designs and for revegetation projects aimed at restoring Australian woodland ecosystems.
