Description
Olax stricta is a perennial shrub that typically reaches heights of 0.5–2 m. The plant bears narrow, linear‑to‑lanceolate leaves, usually 1–4 cm long, with entire margins and a short petiole. Inflorescences are terminal spikes composed of small, greenish, inconspicuous flowers. The fruit is a fleshy drupe, about 4–6 mm in diameter, containing a single seed.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is endemic to eastern Australia. Its range extends from southeastern Queensland (approximately the Cooloola area) southwards through New South Wales to the vicinity of the Australian Capital Territory. It inhabits dry sclerophyll forests, woodland, and rocky slopes, often on nutrient‑poor, sandy or gravelly soils.
Ecology
Olax stricta is a member of the Santalales, a group that includes many hemiparasitic plants. While some Olacaceae species exhibit partial parasitism on the roots of neighboring plants, specific studies confirming this behavior for O. stricta are lacking; thus, its trophic strategy remains unverified.
Conservation Status
The species is not listed as threatened under the Australian Government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. In the states where it occurs, it is generally regarded as common within suitable habitats and is assessed as “Least Concern” where formal evaluations have been made.
