Olav Kjørven (born c. 1960s) is a Norwegian diplomat, development expert, and international public servant, widely recognized for his significant contributions to sustainable development, climate change policy, and global poverty reduction efforts. He has held high-level positions within the United Nations system and the Norwegian government, playing a crucial role in shaping international development agendas.
Biography and Career
Kjørven began his career in journalism before transitioning to public service. He served as State Secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of International Development from 2001 to 2005 under Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik. In this role, he was instrumental in Norway's engagement in international development cooperation, including negotiations for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
In 2005, Kjørven joined the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where he served for over a decade in various influential capacities. He was initially appointed Director of UNDP’s Bureau for Development Policy, and later became Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS). During his tenure at UNDP, Kjørven was a key architect of the organization's strategic approach to sustainable development. He spearheaded initiatives relating to climate change adaptation and mitigation, democratic governance, poverty eradication, and crisis prevention and recovery. He was particularly central to UNDP's efforts to integrate climate change into national development planning and to mobilize resources for climate finance, including through the establishment of the UN-REDD Programme. His work at UNDP also involved significant contributions to the post-2015 development agenda, leading to the formulation and adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
After leaving UNDP in 2016, Kjørven continued his engagement in global sustainability issues. He served as Chief of Staff to the EAT Foundation, an organization focused on transforming the global food system for planetary and human health.
