Definition
Oichalia, Messenia is a municipal unit in the regional unit of Messenia, situated in the Peloponnese region of southern Greece. It was formerly an independent municipality until the 2011 local government reform (the Kallikratis Plan), when it became part of the municipality of Messini.
Overview
The municipal unit of Oichalia occupies an area of approximately 159 km² (61.4 sq mi). According to the 2011 census, the population of the unit was 4,799 inhabitants. Its administrative centre was the town of Oichalia (also spelled Oichalia), which lies inland, roughly 30 km north of the city of Kalamata and about 15 km east of the coastal town of Messini. The region is characterized by a mixture of agricultural land, low‑lying hills, and forested areas. Major transport routes include the Greek National Road 9/E55, which passes near the municipal unit, providing connections to Kalamata and Sparta.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Oichalia” (Greek: Οἰχαλία) is thought to derive from the ancient Greek word “Oichalia” (Οἰχαλία), a toponym associated with several locations in classical antiquity, notably the legendary city of Oechalia linked to mythological narratives about King Eurytus and the hero Heracles. The precise historical connection between the modern settlement and the ancient name has not been definitively established; the modern usage likely reflects a continuity of local tradition rather than direct archaeological evidence. Accurate information on the exact origin of the name is not confirmed.
