[[Ohio State Route 25]] (SR 25) is a relatively short north–south [[state highway]] in the northwestern part of the [[U.S. state]] of [[Ohio]]. Its approximately 18-mile (29 km) route primarily serves the [[Toledo, Ohio|Toledo]] metropolitan area, connecting the city's downtown and southern suburbs.
Route description
The southern terminus of SR 25 is located in [[Perrysburg, Ohio|Perrysburg]] at an intersection with [[U.S. Route 20|US 20]] and [[U.S. Route 23|US 23]] (which run concurrently as Fremont Pike at this point). From this junction, SR 25 proceeds northward, functioning as a major arterial through Perrysburg and into [[Wood County, Ohio|Wood County]]. It passes through various commercial and residential areas, generally paralleling the [[Maumee River]] on its east bank.As it continues north, SR 25 enters [[Lucas County, Ohio|Lucas County]] and the city of Toledo. Within Toledo, the route navigates through various urban landscapes, including sections of downtown Toledo. It connects to major local thoroughfares and provides access to several city landmarks. Its northern terminus is at an interchange with [[Interstate 75|I-75]] in Toledo. For a significant portion of its length, particularly in the southern and central sections, SR 25 carries the historic designation of the [[Dixie Highway]].
History
The current routing of Ohio State Route 25 represents a significantly truncated portion of its original and much longer designation. Historically, SR 25 was one of Ohio's longest state routes, spanning approximately 190 miles (310 km) from its southern end near [[Cincinnati, Ohio|Cincinnati]] to its northern end in Toledo. This longer alignment closely followed the path of the former [[U.S. Route 25|US 25]] through Ohio. When US 25 was largely decommissioned in Ohio in 1974, much of its former alignment was either absorbed into other state routes, became local roads, or was replaced by new Interstate highways. The approximately 18-mile segment that retained the SR 25 designation largely corresponds to the portion of the former US 25 in the Toledo area that was not directly replaced by other U.S. Routes or Interstates. This preserved a historical connection to the national highway system. The current 18-mile (29 km) alignment was officially established following these changes.
