The district lies within the Shaki‑Zagatala economic region and shares borders with the Azerbaijani districts of Qabala, Shaki, and with the Russian Republic of Dagestan to the north. Its administrative centre is the town of Oghuz. The district encompasses a mixture of lowland valleys and mountainous terrain that forms part of the Greater Caucasus range. According to the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan, the population of Oghuz District was estimated at approximately 42 000 inhabitants in 2020, although precise current figures may vary.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Oghuz” is derived from the Oghuz Turks, a historic Turkic tribal confederation that played a significant role in the ethnogenesis of many Turkic peoples, including those of Azerbaijan. The designation reflects the cultural and historical ties of the area to this broader Turkic heritage.
