Ocumal District

Definition Ocumal District (Spanish: Distrito de Ocumal) is one of the twenty-three districts that constitute the Luya Province in the Amazonas Region of Peru. It functions as an administrative subdivision within the Peruvian governmental structure.

Overview Situated in the northern part of Peru, within the diverse geographical landscape of the Amazonas Department, Ocumal District is primarily rural. Its administrative center and capital is the town of Ocumal. The district plays a role in the local governance and economic activities of the Luya Province, contributing to the region's agricultural output and cultural heritage through its communities and natural resources.

Etymology/Origin The name "Ocumal" is generally understood to be of indigenous origin, a common characteristic among many place names throughout Peru. The district itself was formally established by a law enacted on February 5, 1861. This legislative act officially defined its geographical boundaries and administrative framework within the then-emerging departmental and provincial organization of the Peruvian Republic.

Characteristics

  • Geography: Ocumal District is characterized by its rugged Andean topography, featuring significant variations in elevation, deep valleys, and areas of fertile land often found near rivers. It is situated in a transitional zone between the high Andes and the upper Amazon basin, which contributes to its diverse microclimates and ecosystems. The district is traversed by tributaries that feed into major river systems such as the Utcubamba River.
  • Demographics: The district sustains a relatively modest population, with the majority of inhabitants residing in rural areas. The population is primarily engaged in agricultural pursuits, ranging from subsistence farming to small-scale commercial operations. Specific demographic data, including population figures, are systematically collected and published by Peru's National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).
  • Economy: The economy of Ocumal District is predominantly agricultural. Key crops cultivated include coffee, corn, potatoes, various fruits, and other essential staples. Livestock farming, particularly cattle, also represents a significant component of the district's economic activities. The district's natural scenery suggests potential for ecotourism, though development in this sector is ongoing.
  • Administration: As an administrative district within Peru, Ocumal is governed by a Municipal Council, led by a District Mayor who is elected for a four-year term. This local government is tasked with the provision of public services, the responsible management of local resources, and the promotion of developmental initiatives within the district's boundaries, operating under the broader authority of the Luya Province and the Amazonas Region.
