Description
Oarces is a small genus of araneomorph spiders. Members of this genus are characterized by a generally elongated abdomen and leg morphology that distinguishes them from closely related taxa. Detailed morphological diagnoses are provided in taxonomic revisions of the family Oarcesidae.
Species
The genus currently includes two recognized species:
- Oarces ornatus (Nicolet, 1849) – Recorded from Chile and Argentina.
- Oarces reticulatus (Simon, 1903) – Known from Brazil and adjacent South‑American regions.
(Additional species have occasionally been listed in literature, but these two are the ones consistently accepted in recent taxonomic catalogs.)
Distribution and Habitat
Oarces species are native to temperate and subtropical zones of South America, primarily in forested and riparian habitats where they construct irregular webs or adopt a hunting strategy typical of many Oarcesidae.
Taxonomic History
The genus was first described by the French arachnologist Eugène Simon in 1903. Subsequent revisions, notably those by Platnick (1977) and more recent molecular phylogenetic studies, have refined its placement within the family Oarcesidae. Some authors have historically placed Oarces within Araneidae, but current consensus favors Oarcesidae based on morphological and genetic evidence.
Research and Significance
Studies of Oarces contribute to a broader understanding of spider diversity in South America and the evolutionary relationships among araneomorph spiders. Their relatively limited distribution makes them of interest for biogeographic and conservation assessments, although no species in the genus is currently listed as threatened on the IUCN Red List.
