OCA–DLR Asteroid Survey

The OCA–DLR Asteroid Survey (ODAS) was a collaborative astronomical program jointly conducted by the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur (OCA) in France and the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) in Germany. Operating from 1996 to 1999, the survey employed the 0.9‑meter Schmidt telescope at the OCA’s Côte d'Azur Observatory (site at Calern, near Nice) to conduct systematic searches for asteroids, with particular emphasis on near‑Earth objects (NEOs).

Objectives and Operations

  • Detect and catalogue minor planets, especially those whose orbits brought them close to Earth.
  • Provide astrometric observations to refine orbital parameters of known objects.
  • Contribute data to the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center (MPC).

Instrumentation
The survey used a wide‑field CCD camera mounted on the Schmidt telescope, covering a field of view of approximately 2.5° × 2.5°. Exposure times of 30–60 seconds allowed detection of objects down to visual magnitude ≈ 19.5 under typical observing conditions.

Results
During its three‑year operational period, ODAS discovered more than 2,000 new asteroids, including a number of NEOs and potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs). The observations were regularly submitted to the MPC, where they contributed to the improvement of orbital elements for many previously known bodies.

Termination
Funding constraints and the commissioning of newer, larger surveys (e.g., LINEAR, NEAT) led to the cessation of ODAS operations at the end of 1999. The data collected remain part of the historical record of asteroid discovery and are archived for reference.

Legacy
ODAS is recognized as one of the early dedicated NEO search programs and demonstrated the effectiveness of modest‑aperture, wide‑field telescopic surveys in contributing to planetary defense efforts. Its collaborative model between European research institutions set a precedent for later joint initiatives.
