Nuwakot is a district situated in Bagmati Province, Nepal. It is one of the 77 districts of the country, with its administrative headquarters located in the municipality of Bidur.
Historically, Nuwakot held significant strategic importance during the 18th-century unification of Nepal led by King Prithvi Narayan Shah. The Nuwakot Durbar, a seven-story palace complex constructed in the traditional Malla architectural style, remains a primary historical and cultural landmark in the region. This site served as a vital fort and a gateway to the Kathmandu Valley.
Geographically, the district is characterized by hilly terrain, located to the north of the Kathmandu Valley. It is bordered by the districts of Rasuwa to the north, Sindhupalchok to the east, Kathmandu and Dhading to the south, and Dhading to the west. The Trishuli and Tadi rivers are the major water bodies flowing through the district, contributing to its agricultural productivity and the generation of hydroelectric power.
The economy of Nuwakot is predominantly agrarian. Major crops cultivated include rice, maize, millet, and various vegetables. In recent years, the district has also seen development in the poultry industry and tourism, particularly focused on historical sites and trekking routes that pass through the region toward the Langtang range. Nuwakot is connected to the capital via the Pasang Lhamu Highway.
