Nova Ushytsia

Definition
Nova Ushytsia is an urban‑type settlement in western Ukraine, administratively part of Kamianets‑Podilskyi Raion within Khmelnytskyi Oblast.

Overview
Located on the right bank of the Southern Bug River, Nova Ushytsia lies approximately 30 km southwest of the regional capital, Khmelnytskyi. The settlement serves as a local centre for surrounding agricultural villages and hosts basic educational, cultural, and health institutions, including a secondary school, a cultural centre, and a district hospital. Historically, the area belonged to the Podolia region and was incorporated into the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Russian Empire, and later the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic before becoming part of independent Ukraine in 1991. The settlement’s population has been recorded at roughly 5 000 inhabitants in recent years, reflecting a modest decline common to many small localities in the region.

Etymology / Origin
The name combines the Ukrainian adjective nova (новá), meaning “new,” with Ushytsia (Ушиця), which is derived from the nearby Ushytsia River—a tributary of the Southern Bug. The prefix “new” distinguishes the settlement from the older town of Stara Ushytsia (Old Ushytsia) located upstream.

Characteristics

  • Geography: Situated on gently rolling steppe terrain, the settlement experiences a continental‑humid climate with warm summers and cold winters.
  • Economy: The local economy is dominated by agriculture (grain, rapeseed, and vegetable production) and small‑scale food‑processing enterprises. Limited retail and service activities cater to the resident population.
  • Infrastructure: Nova Ushytsia is connected to regional road networks (including the H02 highway) and has a railway station on the line linking Khmelnytskyi with Ternopil. Public utilities provide water, electricity, and gas.
  • Cultural Heritage: Notable sites include the remains of a 17th‑century fortified settlement and the Church of St. Nicholas, an example of early 20th‑century Ukrainian baroque architecture.
