Morphology
Nototherium was a large, herbivorous diprotodontid marsupial. Adult individuals are estimated to have weighed between 400 kg and 1 ton, comparable in size to a modern horse. The genus possessed a robust skull with a pair of enlarged, ever-growing incisors (the characteristic diprotodont dental condition). Limb bones indicate a plantigrade stance and strong, weight‑bearing limbs suited for supporting its massive body. The skeletal morphology suggests a body plan similar to that of Diprotodon, though Nototherium was generally more lightly built.

Paleoecology
As a bulk‑feeding browser/grazer, Nototherium likely inhabited open woodlands and flood‑plain environments where abundant vegetation was available. Its dental and jaw structure is consistent with a diet of coarse plant material, such as leaves, stems, and possibly low‑lying shrubs. The presence of Nototherium in the fossil record contributes to the understanding of the megafaunal assemblages that characterized Australian ecosystems during the Neogene and early Quaternary periods.

Discovery and naming
The genus Nototherium was first described by Australian paleontologist Sir Edgeworth David in 1888, based on fragmentary cranial and dental material recovered from the Pliocene deposits of the Darling River region. The name derives from Greek roots: “noto‑” meaning “south” and “‑therium” meaning “beast,” a reference to its southern (Australian) provenance.
