The species was formally described by entomologists in the early 21st century (see Australian Faunal Directory, 2023). The specific epithet “koolpinyah” references the type locality, Koolpinyah, a pastoral region and wetlands area on the outskirts of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Description

  • Size: Small to medium‑sized damselfly; total body length typically 30–35 mm.
  • Coloration: Adults exhibit metallic green to bronze‑blue dorsum on the thorax, with a narrower black dorsal stripe. The abdomen is dark with pale lateral markings; the terminal segments may show a subtle pale bluish hue.
  • Wings: Narrow, hyaline wings with a slight amber tint near the base; pterostigma is dark and elongated.

Distribution and Habitat

  • Geographic range: Endemic to the northern part of the Northern Territory, Australia, primarily recorded from the Koolpinyah area and adjacent wetland systems.
  • Habitat: Inhabits slow‑moving streams, billabongs, and seasonally flooded floodplains with abundant emergent vegetation. Preference for shaded sections with overhanging foliage has been noted.

Biology and Ecology

  • Life cycle: Like other damselflies, N. koolpinyah undergoes incomplete metamorphosis with aquatic nymphs (naiads) that are predatory on small invertebrates. Emergence occurs during the wet season (roughly November to April).
  • Behavior: Adults are weak, low‑flying fliers, often perching on reeds or low vegetation near water. Mating involves the characteristic “wheel” formation typical of Zygoptera.

Conservation Status

  • The species has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. The Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water lists it as “Data Deficient” due to limited population surveys. Potential threats include habitat modification from agricultural expansion, water extraction, and invasive plant species altering wetland structure.
