The Northern Link is a proposed commuter rail and rapid‑transit line of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system in Hong Kong. It is planned to connect the Tuen Ma line with the Lok Ma Chau spur of the East Rail line, providing an additional north‑south corridor through the western New Territories and a direct rail link to the Huanggang border checkpoint with mainland China.

History
The Northern Link was identified in the Hong Kong Government’s Railway Development Strategy 2014 as part of a broader plan to improve connectivity in the New Territories. Initial proposals envisioned a shuttle service between Kam Sheung Road and Kwu Tung, with construction originally expected to begin in 2018 and the line to open in 2023. Funding estimates at the time were HK$62 billion (December 2015 prices). Subsequent government policy statements and MTR corporate reports have refined the project timeline and scope.
Phases
Phase 1 – Kwu Tung Station
- Construction of Kwu Tung station on the existing East Rail line.
- Station construction approved in 2022; ground‑breaking occurred on 29 September 2023.
- Planned opening in 2027, initially serving the East Rail line and later the Northern Link.
Phase 2 – Main Line
- A 10.7 km double‑track main line between Kam Sheung Road and Kwu Tung.
- Includes three new intermediate stations: Au Tau, Ngau Tam Mei, and San Tin.
- Planning and design commenced in 2021; construction slated to start in 2025 with completion targeted for 2034.
Spur Line
- A 5.8 km spur branching from San Tin to a proposed station serving the Hong Kong‑Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park and terminating at Huanggang Port.
- Construction of the spur is planned to proceed concurrently with Phase 2, with a target opening no later than 2034.
Eastern Extension (proposed)
- An additional 9.5 km extension eastward from Kwu Tung toward Ping Che, passing Lo Wu South and Man Kam To.
- Portions of this extension are earmarked for the separate Northeast New Territories Line.

Purpose and Benefits
- Shortens travel times between Yuen Long and Fanling by reducing the required number of stops from 20 to 5.
- Relieves passenger pressure on the East Rail line by diverting commuters to the Tuen Ma line.
- Enhances cross‑border connectivity via the Huanggang checkpoint, supporting the development of the Northern Metropolis and associated innovation hubs.
Controversies
In July 2021, the Liber Research Community reported that private developers had acquired significant parcels of land adjacent to the proposed alignment, raising concerns about land hoarding and speculative price inflation. The issue has been noted in legislative discussions but remains unresolved.
Current Status
As of 2024, Phase 1 (Kwu Tung station) is under construction with a 2027 completion target. Phase 2 main‑line construction is scheduled to commence in 2025, aiming for full operation by 2034, together with the spur line. No further construction has begun on the eastern extension.
