Etymology / Origin
The name “North Tawson” (as recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086) derives from the River Taw, which flows through the settlement. “Taw” is thought to originate from a Celtic word meaning “river” or “stream.” The prefix “North” distinguishes the town from the nearby settlement of South Tawton, located several miles to the south‑west.
Characteristics
- Geography: The town occupies a valley floor flanked by gently rolling hills of the Devon countryside. The River Taw runs through the centre, contributing to the local floodplain.
- History: Archaeological evidence indicates Roman activity in the vicinity, including a branch road linking Exeter to the inland settlements. The medieval market charter was granted in the 13th century, establishing North Tawton as a local trading hub. The parish church of St Peter, dating from the 13th century, retains Norman and later Gothic architectural elements.
