North Edwards is an unincorporated community and census‑designated place (CDP) in Kern County, California, United States. It lies in the Mojave Desert, approximately 7 mi (11 km) north of the Edwards Air Force Base main gate and about 10 mi (16 km) north of the city of Edwards. The community is situated at an elevation of roughly 2,388 feet (728 m) above sea level.
Geography
North Edwards occupies an area of 4.0 square miles (10.4 km²), all of which is land. The CDP is positioned within the Basin and Range physiographic province and experiences a desert climate characterized by hot summers, cool winters, and low annual precipitation.
History
The settlement developed in the early 1960s to accommodate civilian personnel and families associated with the nearby Edwards Air Force Base. The name “North Edwards” derives from its location north of the base. The community’s growth was tied to the expansion of aerospace testing and training activities at the base.
