Norman Osborn

Character History

Norman Virgil Osborn is initially introduced as a ruthless, power-hungry businessman, the wealthy head and CEO of Oscorp, a major chemical and electronics corporation. He is also the father of Harry Osborn, Peter Parker's best friend. Driven by an insatiable desire for power and control, Osborn experimented with an untested, performance-enhancing formula he was developing for Oscorp, which he hoped would grant him superhuman strength and intelligence. While the serum successfully enhanced his physical and mental capabilities, it also drove him insane, splitting his personality between the ambitious Norman Osborn and the sadistic, maniacal Green Goblin.

As the Green Goblin, Osborn designs a bat-shaped glider and a variety of high-tech weaponry, including pumpkin bombs, razor bats, and electrically charged gloves. He quickly establishes himself as one of Spider-Man's most dangerous and personal foes, frequently tormenting the hero and those close to him.

Major Storylines

  • The Death of Gwen Stacy: One of the most iconic and tragic events in comic book history occurred in The Amazing Spider-Man #121–122 (1973), where the Green Goblin kidnaps Spider-Man's girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, and throws her from the George Washington Bridge (or a replica of it). Although Spider-Man tries to save her with his web, the whiplash from the sudden stop tragically snaps her neck, killing her. This event profoundly affected Spider-Man and cemented the Green Goblin as his archnemesis. Norman Osborn was seemingly killed shortly after in a confrontation with Spider-Man, impaled by his own Goblin Glider.
  • Return of the Green Goblin: Following his apparent death, Osborn was later revealed to have survived due to the regenerative effects of the Goblin formula, spending years in Europe meticulously planning his return. He masterminded the "Clone Saga," manipulating Spider-Man's life and revealing himself as the true orchestrator behind many of Peter Parker's recent woes.
  • Dark Reign: During the "Dark Reign" storyline (2008–2009), following the Skrull invasion, Norman Osborn was hailed as a hero for striking the final blow against the Skrull queen. He leveraged this public image to become the director of H.A.M.M.E.R., a new government intelligence agency replacing S.H.I.E.L.D., and formed his own team of "Dark Avengers," taking on the persona of the Iron Patriot (a heavily modified Iron Man suit with Captain America's colors). In this role, he wielded significant power over the Marvel Universe before his eventual downfall.
  • Superior Spider-Man and Red Goblin: After being depowered and imprisoned, Osborn eventually regained his Green Goblin persona and, at one point, even bonded with the Carnage symbiote, transforming into the terrifying Red Goblin to further torment Spider-Man during the Go Down Swinging arc.

Powers and Abilities

As Norman Osborn, he possesses a genius-level intellect, particularly in the fields of chemistry, engineering, and business strategy. He is an exceptionally shrewd and ruthless manipulator, financier, and schemer.

As the Green Goblin (due to the Goblin Formula):

  • Superhuman Strength: Capable of lifting approximately 9 tons.
  • Superhuman Speed, Agility, and Reflexes: Enhanced physical attributes making him a formidable combatant.
  • Accelerated Healing Factor: Can heal from injuries faster than a normal human.
  • Enhanced Intellect and Madness: While increasing his mental faculties, the formula also amplified his psychopathic tendencies, leading to his split personality and violent behavior.
  • Master Tactician and Strategist: Highly skilled in planning and executing complex schemes.

Equipment:

  • Goblin Glider: A high-tech, rocket-powered personal flying platform equipped with various offensive capabilities.
  • Pumpkin Bombs: Explosive grenades shaped like jack-o'-lanterns, with various payloads (explosive, smoke, gas).
  • Razor Bats: Bat-shaped throwing weapons with sharp edges.
  • Electric Blasts: Gauntlets capable of firing powerful electrical discharges.
