Norm Woodman

Norman "Norm" Woodman (born 27 September 1952) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defender. He is best known for his playing career in the English Football League, notably with Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, and Derby County.

Early Life and Career Beginnings Born in Birmingham, Woodman began his professional career with his hometown club, Aston Villa, joining them as an apprentice and turning professional in 1969.

Professional Career

  • Aston Villa (1969–1976): Woodman was part of the Aston Villa squad that experienced a resurgence in the early 1970s. He made his debut during the 1970-71 season and went on to make over 100 league appearances for the club. He was a member of the team that won the Third Division title in 1971-72 and the League Cup in 1975, though he was not in the starting XI for the final.
  • Sheffield Wednesday (1976–1981): In 1976, Woodman moved to Sheffield Wednesday, then playing in the Third Division. He became a regular starter and a key figure in their defense. During his time at Hillsborough, he made over 150 league appearances and contributed to the club's efforts to climb back up the divisions.
  • Derby County (1981–1983): Woodman then transferred to Derby County. He continued to be a solid presence in defense, adding further experience to the Rams' squad in the Second Division.
  • Later Career: After leaving Derby, Woodman had spells with other clubs, including briefly returning to Sheffield Wednesday on loan, before eventually retiring from professional football.
