The Nordic College for Public Health (officially the Nordic School of Public Health NHV; Swedish: Nordiska högskolan för folkhälsovetenskap) was a regional postgraduate institution for education and research located in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was an intergovernmental body operated under the auspices of the Nordic Council of Ministers and funded by the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.
History and Governance
The institution was established in 1953 to facilitate cooperation between the Nordic nations in the field of public health. For over six decades, it served as a specialized center for advanced training and research, focusing on the specific health challenges and social welfare models characteristic of the Nordic region. The governance of the college involved representatives from all participating Nordic countries, ensuring that its curriculum and research goals aligned with regional health policies.
Academic Scope
The college provided postgraduate education specifically designed for health care professionals, administrators, and researchers. Its primary offerings included a Master of Public Health (MPH) and a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH). The academic curriculum focused on several core areas:
- Epidemiology and Biostatistics: The study of disease distribution and determinants in the Nordic populations.
- Health Promotion and Prevention: Strategies to improve community health outcomes.
- Social Medicine: The intersection of social factors and health.
- Health Economics and Management: The administration of public health systems and the allocation of resources.

Dissolution
In 2013, the Nordic Council of Ministers for Health and Social Affairs decided to dissolve the institution as part of a restructuring of Nordic cooperation. The decision was based on a shift in priorities and the increasing capacity of national universities within the individual Nordic countries to provide similar postgraduate public health education. The Nordic School of Public Health NHV officially ceased operations on December 31, 2014. Following its closure, responsibility for the specialized public health training and research it provided was transitioned to various national academic institutions across the Nordic region.
