The Norbert F. Beckey Bridge is a four-lane crossing that spans the Mississippi River, connecting the city of Muscatine, Iowa, with Rock Island County, Illinois. The bridge carries Iowa Highway 92 and Illinois Route 92.
Construction of the bridge was completed in 1972. It was designed to replace the Muscatine High Bridge, a narrow cantilever structure that had been in operation since 1891. The modern bridge utilizes a continuous steel girder design.
The structure is named in honor of Norbert F. Beckey, a prominent Muscatine civic leader and advocate for the bridge’s construction. Beckey was a member of the Muscatine Bridge Commission and played a significant role in securing the necessary support and funding for the project.
In the early 21st century, the bridge gained additional local recognition for its aesthetic features. A decorative LED lighting system was installed on the structure, allowing it to be illuminated in various colors during the night. This lighting project was funded through private donations and community efforts rather than public tax revenue. The bridge serves as a critical transportation link for regional commerce and daily commuting between Iowa and Illinois.
