Noah Bowlus (1830 – August 9, 1904) was an American politician and businessman from Maryland. He served as a Democratic member of the Maryland House of Delegates representing Frederick County from 1868 to 1872, and later as a state senator for the same county from 1884 to 1888.
Early life and education
Bowlus was born in 1830 in Middletown Valley, Frederick County, Maryland, to David Bowlus. He attended Dickinson College, graduating in 1855, and was admitted to the bar in 1857.
Political career
During his tenure in the Maryland House of Delegates, Bowlus was speaker pro tempore in 1870. After an unsuccessful bid for the Maryland Senate in 1872, he was elected to the Senate in 1884, serving a four‑year term. As a Democrat, he was involved in state legislative matters affecting Frederick County and the broader region.
Business activities
Following his legislative service, Bowlus relocated to Ohio, first to Findlay and later to Toledo around 1890, where he pursued interests in the oil industry. He also held connections to the Middletown Carriage Works and owned property in Virginia and Maryland.
Personal life
Bowlus never married. He was an avid yachtsman and served twice as president of the Toledo Yacht Club. He resided at 1317 Adams Street in Toledo with Mrs. Julia A. Bayless.
Death
Noah Bowlus died of nephritis on August 9, 1904 in Toledo, Ohio. He was interred in Frederick, Maryland.
