No. 9 Squadron RSAF

The No. 9 Squadron RSAF is a maritime patrol squadron of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF).

Overview

No. 9 Squadron operates the Fokker 50 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) from Changi Air Base (East), Singapore. Its primary role is to conduct maritime surveillance, patrol Singapore's territorial waters and sea lines of communication, and participate in search and rescue (SAR) operations within the Singapore Flight Information Region (FIR) and beyond. The squadron plays a crucial role in safeguarding Singapore's maritime security interests.

History

No. 9 Squadron was initially formed in 1971 as a transport squadron, operating the Short Skyvan 3M. It provided essential tactical transport capabilities in the early years of the RSAF. In the mid-1990s, the squadron underwent a significant transformation, being re-roled as a maritime patrol squadron with the acquisition of the Fokker 50 MPA. The first Fokker 50 MPAs were delivered in 1994, enhancing the RSAF's capabilities in maritime domain awareness and surveillance.

Mission and Capabilities

The Fokker 50 MPA operated by No. 9 Squadron is equipped with various sensors, including a multi-mode surveillance radar, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors, and electronic support measures (ESM), allowing it to detect, track, and identify surface vessels and other maritime contacts under various weather conditions, day and night. The squadron's missions include:
